Most people have encountered a fire alarm system in action, whether during a planned evacuation drill at school or an accidental alarm at an event. However, few consider the fundamental functions and components of a fire alarm system.
A basic fire alarm system has four primary purposes:
While some functions require intricate design and engineering, they all serve one of these four main purposes.
The operations of a fire alarm system rely on a series of inputs and outputs. The inputs include fire detection devices and system monitoring devices that activate the control panel. The outputs handle occupant notification and control functions related to life safety. High-rise buildings and other unique structures may need specialized fire alarm systems with complex protection mechanisms. However, even the most elaborate systems boil down to a series of inputs and outputs.

Occupant notification is achieved through audible notification appliances, such as horns, which produce loud sounds, or speakers that play pre-recorded messages or allow emergency responders to give spoken instructions. Visual notification appliances, or strobes, are crucial for alerting hearing-impaired occupants. Different types of buildings require varying occupant notification systems.
Fire alarm systems perform several control functions. For example, a duct-mounted smoke detector will shut down heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment to prevent smoke from spreading to unaffected areas. A smoke detector in an elevator lobby will automatically recall the elevators to a designated floor. Additionally, smoke detectors can activate fans for smoke exhaust or pressurize areas to restrict smoke movement.
Fire alarm signals are required by codes to be automatically transmitted to the local fire department or a central monitoring service, which then notifies the fire department of the emergency. This ensures the fire department receives an immediate signal and can respond quickly to extinguish the fire before it escalates.
